Common Ant Species in Lubbock and Surrounding Areas

Ant infestations can be troubling, especially in Lubbock and the surrounding counties, where several ant species thrive. Here is an overview of some common ant species you might encounter, along with their characteristics, behaviors, and the issues they can cause.

Odorous House Ants

These get their name from the unpleasant smell they emit when crushed. They can nest in wall voids, under floors, or even outdoor areas. Their colonies can house up to 100,000 workers and multiple queens, making controlling them complex. Odorous house ants often invade kitchens, searching for accessible sweets and greasy food items. 

Pavement Ants

As the name suggests, pavement ants build nests in the cracks of sidewalks, walkways, driveways, and slab foundations. Aside from being aggressive colonizers—they often combat nearby colonies—pavement ants forage for seeds, grease, and sugary foods, sometimes traveling up to 30 feet from nesting sites. 

Pharaoh Ants

Known as "sugar ants," these are notorious for their seeking out sweets and their tendency to nest indoors. Pharaoh ants pose unique difficulties because they are exceptionally hard to eliminate and can adapt to living year-round inside homes or businesses.

Fire Ants

These ants are particularly active when their colonies are disturbed. Their unmistakable mound nests can become quite large. Fire ants deliver painful stings, resulting in swelling, irritation, and severe allergic reactions. They can be especially harmful to children and pets.
